Bernard Voïta’s series Melencolia (2014–2017) is an elaborate long-term project realised by means of precise manual work. It is intellectually challenging and arouses curiosity at the same time. Its title is an allusion to Albrecht Dürer’s famous copperplate engraving Melencolia I
(1514), in which the world appears strangely frozen and ‘warped’ in terms of perspective. In the current exhibition, all 15 works are being shown as a whole for the first time – a model-like reflection on the construction and deconstruction of reality. Nothing is as we see it.

To accompany the exhibition, Bernard Voïta is working on an artist’s book, in which he adds to the Melencolia series with a kind of visual commentary from his pictorial cosmos.
