Paul Senn (1901-1953), who grew up in Bern, became one of the most important protagonists of reportage photography in the 1930s with photographs that appeared in the culture magazine du, in the Zürcher Illustrierten and also in international magazines. His subjects range from portraits of workers, farmers and artists to landscape shots, observations from the Spanish Civil War and travel reports that took him through destroyed Europe and to North America after 1945. Senn always focussed on everyday life, and many of his photographs have become icons.

This carefully and expertly produced monograph offers the most comprehensive selection of photographs ever published. For the first time, numerous colour photographs from the USA, Canada and Mexico are also published, supplemented by essays on Paul Senn’s work. The book was published to accompany the exhibition at Kunstmuseum Bern.
