In this tour, curator Madleina Deplazes guides visitors through the exhibition Female. Focus. Photo Archives. and discusses how education, working conditions, family obligations and social conditions shaped the careers of female photographers. She also explains how these realities of life have been recorded in the archives. In German.

Photo Archives., curator Michèle Dick engages in a dialogue-based tour of the exhibition with Verena Aschwanden, niece of Margrit Aschwanden (1913–2004), photographer and managing director of Foto Aschwanden until 2010. In)Visibilities – Perspectives on Working with Women’s Archives

As part of the exhibition Female. Focus. Photo Archives., Fotostiftung Schweiz invites you to an afternoon of lectures and discussions with three experts. Lina Gafner, director of the Gosteli Archive, will talk about the (in)visibility of women in archives and the commitment of the Gosteli Archive. Nathalie Dimic, photo historian and curator, will summarise findings from her research on the professional history of female photographers. Bettina Richter, curator of the poster collection at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, will address the gender gap in museum collections and the challenges facing female exhibition organisers. Afterwards, the speakers will discuss the common ground between their presentations and their relevance to the exhibition in a moderated panel discussion.

Gertrud Dübi-Müller and Marie Ottomann-Rothacher – Women Photographers on Both Sides of the Camera

Curator Katharina Rippstein guides visitors through the exhibition Female. Focus. Photo Archives. and introduces photographers Gertrud Dübi-Müller (1888–1980) and Marie Ottomann-Rothacher (1916–2002). Dübi-Müller portrayed the painters Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno Amiet and documented mountain tours, social life and the occupation of the border in 1914. After completing her training, Ottomann-Rothacher worked in photo studios, photographed reports for Pro Juventute on weekends and captured her family life on film. In German.

The Image Archive Online of Fotostiftung Schweiz provides an insight into the already catalogued collection and archive holdings and introduces selected photographers. It shows a cross-section of Swiss photography’s entire history, from the beginnings of photography, c. 1840, to the present day.

The photo library is publicly accessible and used by the curious, by experts and by staff from the two institutions Fotostiftung Schweiz and Fotomuseum Winterthur. Constantly growing, it contains more than 30,000 publications and around 30 current magazines.
