The theme of “Art and Science” is the common denominator, as it were, of numerous exhibitions and events being organized for autumn 2013 in Winterthur. The contribution by the Fotostiftung Schweiz is devoted to the work of Emil Schulthess (1913-1996). Schulthess used photography repeatedly to explore new territories and convey information about our planet. An intense obser-vation of nature was one of his focal points, as was the exploration of other cultures and living conditions. Having made a name for himself in the 1930s mainly as a graphic artist, Schulthess emerged after the war as a photographer and designer of picture books and as a pioneer of colour photography. He caused a sensation in 1950 with a 360 degree panorama of the midnight sun. That panorama, taken over a course of 24 hours and presented in 24 images, gained him the prestigious U.S. Camera Award and laid the foundations for his international reputation. His books on Africa, the United States, China and the Soviet Union, published in the 1950s and 60s, were among the most popular picture books of their day. Schulthess’ photographic estate has been in the care of the Fotostiftung Schweiz since 2010, where it has been reviewed and reappraised. The results of that work can now be presented to the public in the form of a first large-scale retrospective exhibition.
