Pia Zanetti’s works, reproduced in this publication, are essentially a biographical account of the countless journeys that this dedicated photographer has made in the course of her career. They also testify to a tenacity that has enabled her to breach the palisades of a field that was once an exclusively male domain. Commissioned by such publications as Die Woche, Das Magazin, DU, NZZ Wochenende, uropeo, Espresso and Paris Match, she first travelled through Europe in the 1960s and later to other continents as well. She has always pursued her lifelong interest in the people she encounters on the street, at work, in football stadiums, at play or at rest, capturing the minor and major dramas of everyday life with unobtrusive, empathetic and yet critical precision. Pia Zanetti not only records solidarity and resistance; she is equally indefatigable in seeking out those joyous moments in which dreams seem to come true.
