Simone Kappeler experiments with different analogue cameras, film material and photographic paper. She is interested in how these technologies influence the resulting image. It was not long after her time as a photography student in Zurich that she began this artistic practice.
Seeking more freedom, Kappeler set off on a three-month road trip through the USA in 1981. On the way, she bought various amateur cameras. Alongside deliberately composed images, she also took spontaneous, cheeky, snapshot-like pictures such as this one, for which she used a Diana F camera. The edge blur and vignetting are typical of this cheap Chinese plastic camera, which has since attained cult status.
