Lucia Moholy – Exposures
‘Lucia Moholy - Exposures’ - Exposure of a versatile photographer. Guided tour with the curator and artist Jan Tichy
A central work is the installation No. 30 (Lucia), 2016, which deals with a decisive period in Moholy’s life: in 1933, she had to flee Berlin due to her Jewish origins, leaving behind hundreds of glass plate negatives. Many of these photographs resurfaced unexpectedly after the Second World War – in books, exhibitions and in the catalogue of the Bauhaus exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. However, they were reproduced without Moholy’s consent and without a copyright notice. Walter Gropius, co-founder of the Bauhaus, refused to return the negatives for a long time and denied owning them. It was only after lengthy legal disputes that Lucia Moholy received some of them back in the 1950s – 280 negatives are still considered lost today.
These 280 lost images are at the centre of Tichy’s installation, which was shown in the oxyd-Kunsträume from 8 February to 2 March 2025: 330 full-size glass plates, illuminated in the dark room, formed a fragile monument to the photographer, art historian, critic, writer and archivist.
