Originally trained as an architect, Georg Aerni soon turned to photography. Alongside his work as an architectural photographer, he has always pursued artistic projects as well. This photographer repeatedly directs his gaze at the interfaces between culture and nature.
The photograph Vieste II shows a long-disused quarry in Apulia. In this precisely composed shot, the limestone rock looks like an artificial theatrical stage set. The presented scene remains enigmatic and multi-layered, bearing witness to intense construction activity on one hand and filled with almost majestic tranquillity on the other. Nature and culture have made peace with each other.
